EN     The UN Youth Delegates officially represent the interest of youth from their country at the United Nations (UN). They are selected to accompany the diplomatic delegation of their government to the meeting at the UN, and particularly the General Assembly of the UN.

The UNYD Luxembourg Program is an educational opportunity, a citizenship education project, which aims to support the UN Youth Delegates from Luxembourg so that the voice of youth from Luxembourg can be heard at the UN. As part of their mission, the UN Youth Delegates also raise awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals, making them accessible, tangible and relevant for the lives of young people in Luxembourg, while at the same time creating synergies with other youth initiatives (for example the EU Youth Dialogue).

Meet our UN Youth Delegates of Luxembourg,

Lara and Ema!

Moien!

Themen, déi mir fir mäin Mandat besonnesch um Häerze leien, si virun allem responsabel Produktioun a Consommatioun a Klimawandel. Et schéngt evident, dass de Klimawandel eng grouss Problematik duerstellt, déi eis Mënsche weltwäit betrëfft, an et ass grad fir eis Jonk, déi dee gréissten Deel vun hirem Liewen nach virun sech hunn, ëmsou méi wichteg, dass an deenen nächste Joren (an der Politik an an der Gesellschaft) grouss Schrëtt gemaach gi fir jidderengem eng Zukunft an enger liewenswäerter Ëmwelt bidden ze kënnen!
Hand an Hand mam Klimawandel geet den Ëmweltschutz. Grad Leit aus der „westlecher Konsumgesellschaft“ hunn sech iwwert déi läscht Joerzéngten e Liewensstil ugewinnt, deen alles anescht ewéi nohalteg ass. Et gëtt bei wäitem méi produzéiert, wéi gebraucht gëtt, a mir all sinn an engem System opgewuess, deen eis ugewinnt huet bei wäitem méi ze kafen, wéi mir eigentlech missten. Déi sozial Auswierkunge wéi och den Impakt op d‘Ëmwelt, déi eise stännege Konsum mat sech bréngt, ginn dobäi gezielt ausgeblent.

Wärend mengem Mandat als UNYD wäert ech zesumme mam Ema probéieren, esou vill wéi méiglech op des an aner Problematiken opmierksam ze maachen, e Mentalitéitswiessel ze encouragéieren an e politescht Engagement ze fuerderen, souwuel op nationalem, wéi op internationalem Niveau!

Hi! My name is Lara, I am 19 years old and currently studying at the Lycée Hubert Clément in Esch. Last summer, I participated in the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Summer Institute (Bftf’19 at Purdue University), a huge international exchange program organized in the U.S. for which I was selected to represent Luxembourg alongside 54 other fellows from Europe and America. I have attended numerous Model United Nations (MUN) conferences over the last years and I am currently an active member of the Luxembourgish Youth Parliament.

Climate change and environmental protection are topics that have marked our generation. It is clear that climate change is a global issue we are all facing together. However, it is especially concerning for young people, considering that the biggest part of our lives still lies in the future. It is therefore particularly important for society and politics to take adequate action over the next years, so that everybody has the chance to live in a habitable world.
Apart from climate change, reckless overproduction and overconsumption are another huge issue the world faces. Especially people from developed countries have grown up in a consumerist society that tempts them to abide by a system of constantly buying more, ignoring the devastating costs this imposes on people and the planet. Therefore, it is crucial that environmental and social protection measures are taken for the sake of a better, more sustainable future for everyone on this planet.

Our mission as UN youth delegates is to raise awareness on these and other problematics, to encourage a shift towards a more sustainable way of life, as well as demand political action to be taken on a national and international level.

Hallo! Mäin Numm ass Ema, ech sinn 20 Joer al a studéiere momentan zu SciencesPo Paris mat enger regionaler Spezialisatioun op Asien.

Firwat grad Asien? Ier ech a Frankräich studéiere gaange sinn, hunn ech meng lescht zwee Joer am Lycée op engem United World Colleges a China verbruecht, wou ech vum lëtzebuergesche Comité ausgewielt gouf, an engem Internat mat Studenten aus der ganzer Welt zesumme ze liewen an den Internationale Baccalaureate ze maachen. (UWC Luxembourg). Proffen a Studenten a menger Schoul hunn ee grousse Fokus op d’Ëmweltverantwortung an d’Nohaltegkeet gesat, an ech hu immens vill bäigeléiert, wéi eis Handlungen an Interaktioune net nëmmen eis eegen Zukunft beaflossen, mee och op e extremem Ausmooss déi meescht vulnerabel Gesellschaften a Länner op der Welt degradéieren. Eent vun eisen Haaptziler als UN-Jugenddelegéierten ass d’Sensibiliséierung vun SDGen ze fërderen, besonnesch déi, déi den Klimawandel betreffen, an d’Interesse vun der Lëtzebuerger Jugend ze vertrieden.

Ier ech meng Aventure a China ugefaangen hunn, hunn ech vill vu menger fräier Zäit domadder verbruecht, un Aktivitéiten deelzehuelen, déi mer erlaabt hunn, Politik am allgemenge kënne besser ze verstoen, andeems ech zum Beispill dem Jugendparlament an dem Europäesche Jugend Parlament bäigetruede sinn an d’MUN’s gemaach hunn. Do eréischt gouf mir bewosst, wéi entscheedend d’Roll vun de jonke Leit an den Entscheedungsprozesser ass. Grad well déi Jonk d‘Zukunft wäerte bestëmmen, brauche mir elo eng fest Stëmm méi wei jeemools.

Hi! My name is Ema, I am 20 years old and am currently studying at Sciences Po Paris with a regional specialization on Asia.

But why Asia? Before moving to France, I had spent my last two years of high school at a United World College in China, where I was chosen by the luxembourgish committee to represent Luxembourg and to live in a school with students from all around the world and complete the International Baccalaureate. Teachers and students in my school put an enormous emphasis on environmental responsibility and sustainability, and I had found myself learning a lot about how our actions and inactions not only impact our own future, but alter to an extreme extent the most vulnerable societies and countries in the world. One of my main goals as a UN Youth Delegate is raising awareness and promoting the SDGs, especially the ones related to climate change, and representing the interests of luxembourgish youth.

Before starting my journey in China though, I spent a lot of my free time taking advantage of all the opportunities that were offered to learn beyond the classroom about contemporary politics within and outside of Luxembourg, by joining for example the Youth Parliament of Luxembourg, the European Youth Parliament (EYP LU – European Youth Parliament Luxembourg asbl.)and participating in MUN’s.This made me realize how crucial the role of young people in decision-making processes is. Because we are the future of tomorrow, our voice must be influencing decisions more than ever.
